Collaborative Divorce with LGBTQI Clients: cultural competence + legal considerations

As the family law landscape evolves, collaborative lawyers and conflict professionals in all fields who deal with divorce issues, begin to find themselves serving clients who are otherwise under-served by family and matrimonial courts and services. From polyamorous triads to cisgender parents seeking support with the needs of their transgender child, this workshop will provide cultural competency training and practice tips for working with queer and transgender clients. There will be a particular focus on assisting transgender clients through divorce and separation. Participants will leave the workshop with a basic understanding of the unique needs of a range of queer and transgender clients through divorce. Legal as well as psychological issues will be discussed and practical skills will be taught to help collaborative attorneys, family specialists and financial professionals who may work with this population to serve them competently and with sensitivity.
