NYACP Racial Equity Media Club Meeting

Launching Racial Equity Media Club- 9/21 5:30 to 7PM- Watch and Let's talk About It - "13th" a film by Ava Duvernay

 Ava Duvernay explores a loophole in the 13th Amendment which deems a form of slavery acceptable in the legal form of criminal punishment and how it contributes to systemic racism today; providing historical context to the events leading up to the Black Lives Movement. The film was nominated for dozens of awards, winning best documentary at the British Academy Film Awards and the Primetime Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award for excellence, and receiving a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. DuVernay received a Primetime Emmy Award for writing, and was nominated for directing.

Meetings are the third Thursday of every other month at 5:30pm - 7:00pm, September through June.

For some time, the NYACP has been engaged in ongoing conversations about how to support anti-racist work and broaden knowledge and representation within our membership. In 2023, we launched the Racial Equity Committee to facilitate different avenues to increase awareness on issues surrounding racial equity and justice. 

Aside from providing ongoing training programs and discussions for the NYACP membership, the Racial Equity Media Club was created. Every other month there will be a video or book that Club members will view or read a specific selection and then discuss as a group at a Club meeting. Eblasts will go out for each meeting and registration to each meeting will be required. Registration links are below.

The meetings will be virtual, from 5:30pm-7:00pm on the 3rd Thursday every other month beginning on September 21, 2023. In June 2024, there will be an in person social event to gather and enjoy each other's company.

Both the NYACP Media Club and the media resource list below are intended to encourage engagement with materials and subjects that may be normally overlooked, and to engage our members to be open to different perspectives and experiences.
