Hosted by the NYC Pod

Revisit our Working Assumptions

Elana Katz, LCSW, LMFT, and Barbara Rothberg, Ph.D.

Since its inception, we've held to the paradigm that the Collaborative Team serves our clients for a discreet body of work and we recede if they leave the collaborative process or upon the signing of a settlement agreement. As collaborative work in New York has matured into its 15th year, this may be a time to revisit some of our working assumptions. Is it best to leave our clients at their signature line, and does this decision vary depending on the role of the professionals involved? Would parents do well to have a more extended option with the family specialist? Would it be helpful to continue to get financial advice? Please join us as we take a session to raise questions and consider options in our work.

Bios

Elana Katz is a practicing family therapist, mediator and family specialist. She was one of the first therapists in New York to become certified in Emotionally Focused Therapy, an approach that helps clients understand and change their patterns in key relationships. Now a certified EFT Trainer, and the co-chair of the Diversity Committee for the International EFT organization, Elana has applied her knowledge of attachment and relational dynamics to help mediation and collaborative law clients intercept the recurring patterns that shape high conflict divorce. She presents nationally and internationally, most frequently in Israel and various locations in the Midwestern United States, and her private practice is in Manhattan.

Dr. Barbara Rothberg is a licensed clinical social worker and has been in practice for more than 40 years. She has additional training and certifications in Family and Couple Therapy, Mediation, Collaborative Practice and Child Inclusive Mediation. Barbara has worked as a family and couple therapist, mediator, parent coordinator with high conflict couples, and divorce coach/family specialist in conjunction with collaborative attorneys and other mediators. She is a member of FDMC, where she is a board member, NYACP, AFCC, NYSCDM, and is on the Advisory Council of Familykind, as well as the Gender Project at the Ackerman Institute. She received her doctorate in Social Work at The Graduate Center, Hunter School of Social Work.
