Understanding the underlying dignity concerns
of grievances can make an enormous difference in resolving conflict. Based
on the research of Dr. Donna Hicks (Harvard University), this presentation
introduces her Dignity Model. We will examine how to lead with dignity, dr
aw out the best in people and apply the Dignity Model to our work. Particip

Teresa Calabrese is a mediator and
collaborative lawyer concentrating her practice on serving LGBTQ people an
d families. Teresa assists individuals, couples and families in creating ag
reements relating to relationship formation, family building, separation an
d divorce. Teresa also handles second parent adoption matters and provides
basic estate planning services. Teresa has presented continuing education
programs for the CUNY School of Law Community Legal Resource Network, the F
amily and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York, the International
Academy of Collaborative Professionals, New York Association of Collaborati
ve Professionals, and the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation. Ter
esa is a founding member of the Community Legal Resource Network and the LG
BTQI Family Professionals of NYC. She is a Co-Chair of the LGBT Bar Associa
tion of Greater New York Committee on Family and Matrimonial Law and a memb
er of the Family and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York, the Int
ernational Academy of Collaborative Professionals, and the New York State C

Andrea began her legal career in the family law section o
f Legal Services in Brooklyn and went on from there to handle matrimonial m
atters in a small boutique law firm. After seeing how litigating divorce to
re families apart, Andrea left litigation and founded Hirshman Collaborativ
e Law and Mediation in 2007. She offers divorce mediation, collaborative di
vorce and negotiated divorce as alternative processes to litigation. The co
re of Andrea’s practice is recognizing that the greatest common denominator
of all people is their desire to be treated as if they matter - at all tim
es. When working with Andrea, clients feel heard, understood, and know t
hey matter. They are able to have difficult conversations under Andrea’s gu
idance and forge a constructive path forward together toward resolution of
their issues. Andrea is an active member of the close-knit professional c
ommunity of mediators and collaborative attorneys in the Greater NY area. S
he has served on the boards of numerous organizations and is an active memb

Joy S. Rosenthal, Esq.

aw & Mediation in 2006 to help New York City’s families cope with trans
itions through divorce and family mediation; and by providing legal service
s including collaborative divorce, and adoption. She also currently serves
as a Trustee and 17A Guardian in the New York City Surrogates’ Courts, and
as an adjunct professor of family law at the City University of New York Sc
hool of Law. Before opening her own practice, Joy spent ten years represen
ting children, youth and parents in New York City’s Family Courts involved
in child protective, custody, visitation and adoption cases, as well as in
delinquency and PINS cases through her work with the Legal Aid Society’s Ju
venile Rights Practice and as a fellow at NYU School of Law’s Family Defens
e Clinic. Joy has extensive mediation, negotiation, trial and appellate ex
perience. She has trained colleagues and students in all aspects of family
law. Joy S. Rosenthal, Esq. graduated from the University of Massachusetts
at Amherst, receiving a BA in Women’s Studies. She obtained her law degree
from the City University of New York School of Law. She is a former presid
ent of the Family & Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York, and
served on its board from 2007-2014. She is also the president of One Breath
Rising, Inc. Joy’s vision is to live in a world where people know how to
voice their feelings and perspectives, and to treat each other with dignity
