1:00pm - 5:00pm Dr. Charles Chaffin Presentation: Client Crisis Events: Helping an Individual Navigate Divorce and Other Significant Life Events
Dr. Chaffin will discuss ways to help individuals who are confronting challenges related to divorce. Drawing upon his work in the cognitive psychology as well as the psychology of financial planning, he will discuss the stages that individuals go through as it relates to the stages of change and how to communicate at each of these stages. Finally, he will discuss how to engage individuals who are in crisis.
This session will be interactive, consisting of breakout exercises amongst attendees as well as group discussion.
Hour 1 Change process- Steps of motivational interviewing and identify client’s stages when it comes to change.
Hour 2 Breakout groups- Communication dos and don’ts. Group will go back and forth between large group session/discussion and breakout throughout this hour.
Hour 3 Client crisis events: What to do about it
Hour 4 Breakout groups: Roleplay amongst groups in navigating crisis events Group will go back and forth between large group session/discussion and breakout throughout this hour.
Dr. Charles Chaffin, Author/Consultant/Professor
Dr. Charles Chaffin’s work brings psychology to financial planning practice. He has served as author or lead editor of 7 different books within financial planning and cognitive psychology, helping practitioners become more client-centered as well as helping individuals and companies address distraction in the workplace. He most recently appeared on CNBC with appearances on multiple TV and radio shows and has given keynote talks in 12 countries.
He was editor of The Financial Planning Competency Handbook (2013, 2016) as well as lead author and editor of Client Psychology (2018).
Dr. Chaffin is co-founder of the Psychology of Financial Planning suite of programs which has enrolled close to 5,000 advisors and students from close to 100 colleges and universities within the first year. He is also co-founder of MRI, the Money & Risk Inventory, a first-of-its-kind assessment that explores the financial psychology and risk tolerance of a client and provides practical insights to the advisor.
Dr. Chaffin served as co-Academic Director of the Client Psychology program at The Wharton School as well as Program Lead of the Financial Planning Teaching Seminar at Columbia University. He is co-founder of the Affirming Advisor™ program, the first designation in financial services designed to help advisor better serve LGBTQIA+ clients and allies. In his previous role, he led research and education activities at CFP Board for over a decade. He is based in New York and is Professor of Practice at Iowa State University.
